Music at St. Paul’s

The music at St. Paul’s Parish is first and foremost dedicated to providing uplifting and inspiring music for the liturgical seasons of the church year. Music selections are carefully chosen to serve both the liturgy and the congregation. Our Catholic tradition is rich with treasures both ancient and modern. The music at St. Paul’s will always reflect a healthy balance of traditional and contemporary music for the Mass.

1. Choir. Adult choir rehearsals for Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter are on Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:30pm in the church, usually beginning four or five weeks prior to Advent and Lent. No prior experience required.

2. Children’s Choir. Throughout the year the children of the parish will be invited to sing special music for Mass. It is my hope that these special invitations will become the seeds for a Children’s Choir.

3. Youth Choir/Ensemble. All Middle School and High School students are invited to participate in a Youth Ensemble every Saturday following the 4:30pm Mass (5:30-6:30pm). During the school year the youth in our parish lead a liturgy for the Sunday 6:30pm Mass at the end of each month (excepting December). The Ensemble currently consists of guitars, drums, bass, and piano. We welcome all the youth of the parish to explore their instrumental and vocal aspirations. We truly make a joyful noise, come to the 6:30pm Mass (last Sunday of the month) and check us out sometime.

4. Organ Music. The organ is rarely silent. We are blessed with an extraordinary instrument that is a joy to play. Music for every Mass begins at least 45 minutes (and sometimes an hour) before Mass begins. Repertoire selections are chosen to enhance and illustrate the current liturgical season always ending with Chorale Preludes on the current Masses hymns and songs.

5. Music Lector Series. When the choir is not in rehearsal for Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter, Wednesday evenings in the church are full of music by way of a lecture series with an abundance of recordings played through our magnificent sound system. Previous lecture subjects have included “The History of Western Music Through the Eyes of the Church” and “The Great Requiems.” Suggestions are always welcome for future subjects. Every Wednesday from 7:00-8:30pm there is music in the church. Please come and check it out.

6. Music Library. The chapel now contains a small, but growing, music lending library. The CD collection is from past lecture series. Please feel free to take a CD or two, just sign your name so we know where the CDs are and enjoy them in your car, home, and iPods.

7. Concerts. From time to time artists are invited to present concerts in the church. We are blessed with an acoustic that attracts world-class musicians and a Pastor who understands the value music in our lives. Watch for concert announcements in the weekly bulletin.
